Digital Traffic Flow Optimisation Stuttgart

Various data sources on traffic and the environment are connected, modelled and analysed to gain a deeper understanding of traffic and enable targeted interventions through appropriate traffic management strategies.

Connecting Data, Understanding Traffic

The Digital Traffic Flow Optimisation project connects, models and analyses a wide range of traffic and environmental data to gain a deeper understanding of traffic and enable targeted interventions through appropriate traffic management strategies. The aim is to optimise traffic flow in the long term, reduce emissions and imissions, and improve air quality. For a more realistic picture of current traffic conditions, real-time vehicle data from a representative vehicle fleet is being used for the first time.

As part of the project, Trafficon is developing the online tool and the traffic correlation model. By visualising the data on a digital map, the tool provides an up-to-date picture of traffic, emissions, imissions and safety-critical driving conditions. The newly developed Hotspots module identifies recurring problem areas in terms of traffic quality, emissions, imissions and safety-critical driving conditions. The traffic correlation model then detects patterns and relationships across the different data sources for these hotspots. This provides the basis for planning targeted traffic management strategies in the planning tool.

Modules

Modules for Targeted Traffic Management

The online tool is based on Trafficon’s Dynamic Traffic Monitor (DTM). In addition to the Hotspots module, the following Dynamic Traffic Monitor modules are used:

Strong Partnerships

Together with our project partners and subcontractors, we are implementing the DVFO system for our client, the Integrated Traffic Control Centre Stuttgart (IVLZ), with testing starting in 2023.

Trafficon Software is responsible for the technical implementation of the online tool and the traffic correlation model, while Trafficon Innovation oversees the project as a whole.

The DVFO project is part of the Green City Masterplan of the City of Stuttgart and is funded through the Digitalisation of Municipal Transport Systems programme of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMVI).

Outlook

Understanding Connections, Taking Targeted Action

The innovative approach developed in the Digital Traffic Flow Optimisation Stuttgart project enables new insights into the relationships between weather, the environment, traffic, driving behaviour and road safety. These insights can help improve traffic flow, air quality and road safety in Stuttgart in a sustainable and targeted way.
